On A Clear Day

Driving to Seattle on a clear day is very revealing.  It shows me what I’ve been missing all the other days of the year.  The things that are there, yet hidden.  The Cascade Mountains, for one.  Suddenly I’m aware that my world isn’t so small after all – and just beyond my ability to perceive them lies untold beauty.

How many times are we like a cloudy, rainy day in our thoughts – going along through the day with all the correct motions and intentions, and yet perceiving our world as much smaller than it really is.

I was challenged to take a lesson from nature – open up my eyes and LOOK around me – for things I cannot see with my natural limited senses.  I want to reach far beyond the box of “normal” and see with God eyes all the beauty I’m missing.

I thought of the song “On a clear day you can see forever” and was reminded that it is clearness in both our eyes and thoughts that can give us that unique perspective on things around us.  And I want to always remember what is invisible when the storms of life close in on me and I cannot see.

Dear Lord – help me to hang on to that clear vision from those clear days – and to use it when those tough times close in around me.

When was the last time you saw things with “clear vision”?

I heard the following song on Spotify today from a local Seattle band – and have been writing this article with this tune in my head.

Enjoy and God Bless

Tell me somethin’, give me hope for the night
We don’t know how we feel
We’re just prayin’ that we’re doin’ this right
Though that’s not the way it seems

Summer gone, now winter’s on its way
I will miss the days we had
The days we had
I will miss the days we had
The days we had
Oh, I’ll miss the days we had

Loving, leaving, it’s too late for this now
Such esteem for each has gone
Has time driven our season away?
Cause that’s the way it seems
In the world of the speech that is new
I’ll be back again to stay
Again to stay
I’ll be back again to stay
Again to stay
I’ll be back again to stay

When Spiders Attack In The Dark

Something weird happened the other day when the weather was nice.  We spent a lot of time outside, on trails and parks around our town.  It was SO NICE to be outside – I got a nice sunburn on my neck and shoulders, but it was still such a change in weather, I didn’t mind.

Then the weird thing.  I noticed a bump on the back of my neck by my hairline – and associated irritation to the side of my neck.  My first thought:  Spider bite.  But Greg couldn’t really see anything, redness or welt – so I began to think it was my imagination.  The next day the lymph node on that side of my neck felt larger, like something draining into it – so at least I didn’t think I was crazy anymore.  It was definitely some kind of insect bite.

I began to google “spider bite” And was amazed at the things I was reading. Some people got bites while walking around outside – some while sleeping IN BED. I asked Greg how this could happen while I slept – I mean – where did they come from?  How did they get in?  It messed with me – got all mingled up in my thoughts, all the while still feeling the swollen neck.

Last night Greg worked late and we were finally settled in when all of a sudden I opened my eyes and looked above my head, only to discover a SPIDER WEB shining in the moonlight directly above my head.  The web string had not one but two little spiders hanging on the end of it.

FINALLY I have an answer, I thought – and said out loud to Greg, “there’s a spider web above my head with two spiders!”  He said nothing.  So I said it again, “Greg – are you hearing me?  I said – THERE’S A WEB ABOVE MY HEAD WITH SPIDERS ON IT!”  Still nothing.  “Greg – are you dumb?  Can you hear me?  I’m going to turn the light on now – get ready to GET THEM!”

I jumped up and turned on the light.  Greg was sleepy and somewhat reluctant to help me in my distress – but he did make a generous arm gesture – sweeping the area above where I was sleeping.  I couldn’t believe that was all he was going to do – I mean, if you knock down the web string – won’t the little spiders then crawl all over the bed and more to the point – my PILLOW?  We looked everywhere for the web and the spiders which had now disappeared – and Greg quizzed me, “you said there were two spiders? You know that’s pretty much impossible, right?”  Hmmmm.  He didn’t believe me – but I knew what I had seen.

We finished our search – looked above our heads, at the ceiling – nothing.  So I finally turned off the light and crawled back in bed.  With the light out again – I tried to see the spot where I had first seen the spiders dangle down in front of me.  It was pitch black in our room – no moonlight at all.  It was then that I realized I must have dreamt it.  There was no way I could have seen a spider web in the dark.

By this time I was quite flabbergasted.  I mean – it was so real!  How would I wake up that fast and say what I did to Greg?  It seemed impossible to me – and yet I could not explain the total darkness.  The whole thing became HILARIOUS to us.  The yelling at Greg to “DO SOMETHING” – the sweeping his arm over the place where I was sleeping – all of it!  Then Greg said, “maybe they were coming back to finish the job”  We must have laughed for a good half hour after that.

Hopefully NOT!!

Needless to say – there are NO spiders in our bed – real or imagined.  And my bite will continue to be somewhat of a mystery.  At least for now :)

Shenandoah – Most BEAUTIFUL version EVER!

This last week a voice student of mine participated in “All State Choir” held in Bellevue  Washington.  This brought back many memories for me – as I also participated in this event when I was a junior in high school.  It was a 3 day event held in Yakima, Washington – a chance to sing with the best of the best in all high schools across Washington, Montana and Northern Idaho.

I have many memories of being involved in this event – but my FAVORITE one is this next song.  It is the exact arrangement that our choir did.  If you listen to it all the way through you will hear the melody line and the harmonies sounding like waves on a river – the gentle soft rolls, dipping and falling.  At some points in the song, the harmonies rising above the melody line – and then the beautiful falsetto voices of the men.  I have never heard an arrangement that can equal this one.

I found this explanation of the lyrics and song origin on Wikipedia:

“The lyrics may tell the story of a roving trader in love with the daughter of an Indian chief; in this interpretation, the rover tells the chief of his intent to take the girl with him far to the west, across the Missouri River. Other interpretations tell of a pioneer’s nostalgia for the Shenandoah River Valley in Virginia, or of a Confederate soldier in the American Civil War, dreaming of his country home in Virginia. The provenance of the song is unclear.”

Whatever you think the meaning of the song – I’m sure that you will agree that this is one of the most BEAUTIFUL folk ballads ever written.  I find myself becoming emotional at the sheer simple sweetness of this arrangement – as I remember singing the second soprano part – over 30 years ago.  Come along on my journey as I remember the past.

Hope you enjoy it!

Day 10 – Silent Night by Jackie Evancho

O Holy Night (Jackie Evancho album)

Image via Wikipedia

A few nights ago – I saw again, the wonderful PBS special with David Foster and Jackie Evancho – the little girl who sings with maturity YEARS beyond her age.  I must admit that I was skeptical when first hearing about her – but now that I have followed her career – I have discovered a rare talent that will be around for years to come.

Here is a sweet peek into her relationship with her brother and a music video of “Silent Night”.

Enjoy and God Bless
